“Stretch your limits once in a while. You may find you have more range than you thought.”
When Ms.Mulder told us to blog about this quote, I was completely stoked. Want to know why?
Because it completely relates to what I’ve been working on lately. The last couple weeks, I’ve really been physically pushing myself to get bigger and better times and wattages. In just one-ish month, I’ve noticed an immense improvement in my power on the rowing machine and control/technique on the water. I think training on the rowing machine has helped me the most with my on water training, just as far as strength goes. An example of how much I’ve improved is that at the beginning January, when I first started out on the rowing machine, rowing at 130 watts (medium-high strength for me) for more than 5 minutes was tiring. But last night at Rowing Practice, when we were working on constant pacing, I rowed 5km (took 20 minutes) at 140 watts and still felt pretty good after. I did NOT expect that at all, which relates to “you may find you have more range than you thought.”
I’ve also noticed a huge improvement in gym class, specifically the one kilometer run. Last year I was running it at about 5:10 to 5:30 minutes, and a couple of days ago I ran it in 4:20 minutes. I feel stronger and have more energy in general lately, even though I’ve only been training regularly on the rowing machine for a month and a half.
Anyways, that’s what I’ve been up to lately. Unfortunately, I’ll be in Costa Rica for my team’s next regatta (0n water race) but I’m still training with them because I believe there is another similar one in April. My project for the next couple weeks is repainting and varnishing my dad’s old single rowing shell that he built a couple of years ago. It’s been collecting dust in the basement for years. I’m hoping to take some pictures of my progress next week for post #4.
